SOME (So Others Might Eat) exists to help the homeless and poor of Washington, DC. With over 30 programs throughout the District of Columbia, we provide a wide spectrum of services to the most vulnerable individuals and families of our city. We strive to provide success paths toward mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training and employment with a living wage, affordable housing, and ultimately living independently and confidently.

Seeking Fall Semester 2022 Interns in the MD/DC/VA area. Internship is September 12 - December 9, 2022.

Interns will receive a $400 monthly stipend and there is flexibility for telework (one day per week required in our DC offices on Benning Road, NE.)

Internship Overview:

Participants in this internship program must require an internship for college credit or as a requirement for graduation. The focus of the intern in this role will be to assist the HR Team with day-to-day responsibilities that are crucial to our operations. The intern will be required to engage with employees at various levels of the organization and prove themselves to be a valuable resource to anyone that has HR-related questions or issues. The primary emphasis of this internship will be on Recruiting/Talent Management, however, assistance and exposure to other areas of our HR Department will be included. Below are the responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Recruiter to learn about the recruiting process, assist with recruiting and screening applicants.
  • Conduct candidate telephone screenings.
  • Research and implement technology enhancements to aid the HR department including but not limited to data entry automation, employee self-service portal, and emergency alert system.
  • Visit at least two external HR departments to learn about their recruiting practices and report findings. Assess to determine which practices might be conducive to SOME's standard practice.
  • Research additional advertising resources for frequently open positions. In addition, register with local universities' career sites to establish accounts to advertise on their career sites.
  • Attend career fairs and hiring events as needed with an emphasis on Veterans and the Disabled.
  • Learn to use HRIS systems including ADP, HRB, and HRM application tracking systems. Post positions on the company website using the applicant tracking system and other job sites as deemed appropriate.
  • Shadow HR team to become familiar with their day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Assist HR Employee Relations staff with documentation maintenance and correspondence maintenance
  • Assist HR Employee Development staff with organizing and executing training sessions for a wide variety of SOME staff
  • Assist HR Total Rewards and Wellness staff with the maintenance and execution of benefits and wellness programs provided by SOME to staff.
  • Check references for potential hires.
  • Assist with Staff Morale events, duties might include setting up, cleaning up after an event, and planning.
  • Receive exposure to writing and development of job descriptions.
  • Learn about the business aspects of running a company wellness program.
  • Other related HR and Benefits support functions and special projects.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings.
  • Other related duties such as copying, electronic scanning, faxing, and other assistance with projects as the need arises.

Learning Objectives:

  • The intern will be able to become familiar with the day-to-day operations of a full-service HR department.
  • The intern will be able to assist in documentation maintenance and collection for the HR Employee Relations department.
  • The intern will be able to assist in training scheduling and execution for HR Employee Development and Training department.
  • The intern will be able to assist in the maintenance and execution of employee wellness and benefits for the HR Total Rewards and Benefits department.
  • The intern will be able to read and interpret HR policies and become familiar with how to write a policy or procedure.
  • The intern will be able to identify appropriate websites and advertise positions based on the job description and needs of the department/program.
  • The intern will be able to devise and post vacancy announcements for various positions.
  • The intern will be able to learn and use two or more Human Resources Information Systems.
  • The intern will be to learn how to properly complete a reference check for a potential hire as well as place an order for an electronic reference check.
  • The intern will be able to plan and implement at least one staff morale event for the employee recognition program.
  • The intern will be able to use the internet and other means to conduct research on salaries, career sites, and other related areas. Use research to assist in improving processes and completing projects.

Qualifications: Must be a college student with good academic standing and doing an internship for college credit. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA or better. A college student with a major or minor in Business and/or Human Resources is preferred. Must be able to commit to working 3 days a week during business hours (24 hours each week).
