Summary

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI)'s Regulation & Certification Department is currently seeking a Test Certification and Regulation Engineer for our Team at the Superior Township facility in Michigan, just east of Ann Arbor. HATCI's Certification & Regulation Team helps support Hyundai and Kia vehicles meeting the challenging environmental, and emissions standards at the federal, state, and local levels, through certification & in-use testing.

The Certification & Regulation engineer would be responsible for creating and maintaining the Certification Test Procedures (CTP), which includes all test cycles related to tailpipe and evaporative emissions. Testing may include: certification (EDV, FEDV, EVAP, DDV), in-use compliance (IUVP), mileage accumulation, coastdown, special driving pattern arrangements, PEMS and other emissions-related items. Team members need to be knowledgeable in emission test practices, current & future regulatory requirements, CFR (Code of Federal Regulation) & CCR (Code of California Regulation), and Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AFAI) certification and testing workgroups.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain test procedures to ensure proper execution of official EPA and CARB testing. Proactively follow up on all issues related to this topic. Including internal audits to confirm proper processes are being followed.
  • The Engineer will participate in industry workgroups for certification and testing topics. Document and provide feedback to Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) teams, and also represent HMG perspective on each topic.
  • The Engineer will be expected to have strong people skills.
  • Perform additional projects as assigned.
  • Review federal and state regulations related to EPA and CARB test procedures, including new or upcoming regulations such as ACC2 & Tier 4. Ensure that current processes meet all requirements and assist management to address any discrepancies.
  • Demonstrate a high-level writing ability.
  • Be capable of understanding engine and emission control system testing operations and be highly capable of quickly understanding and interpreting technical problems and issues as represented in testing system problems.
  • Create and present technical reports as assigned.
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary for this position. Conflict resolution between test requestors and test entities would be another critical factor in this role.
  • Travel up to 15% of time domestically and internationally is possible.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management, executive staff, and peers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the certification process, including automotive certification testing, automotive engineering principles and operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle emissions regulations, such as CFR 40 Parts 86, 600, and 1066, or a clear understanding of capability necessary to review, interpret, and apply such regulations.
  • Working knowledge of a vehicle emission test lab
  • Engine system and engine management operation knowledge beneficial
  • Working knowledge of HEV / PHEV / BEV would be beneficial.
  • Working knowledge of ETAS (INCA) and/or CAN DB tools would be beneficial.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, high integrity and ethical behavior.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to rapidly changing business requirements.

Field Environment or Test Environment

  • Shop Environment - exposure to fuel, compressed air/gas, emissions and exhaust fumes; pinching, tripping, electrical, and chemical hazards; bending and stooping required; must be able to lift up to 75 lbs. and work safely with hand power tools. Safety glasses required.
  • Laboratory Environment - exposure to fuel, compressed air/gas, emissions and exhaust fumes. Pinching, tripping, electrical, and chemical hazards; bending and stooping required. May be exposed to hazardous conditions; must have clear understanding of safety; may have to lift up to 50 lbs. Safety glasses required.
  • May include travel, both domestically and internationally, to attend conferences and technical meetings with government agencies, technical organizations, corporate offices, and affiliates.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or other analytical/technical fields
  • 5+ years' experience in Emission/Evaporation Testing Process
  • 3+ years' experience in Quality Control Development or similar process development
  • Valid Driver's License and satisfactory Driving Record
